More than a year ago the Aprilia RS 457 was unexpectedly sighted testing in India.

A twin cylinder motorbike manufactured in India by the firm with its headquarters in Noale Italy.

It demonstrated Aprilias commitment to having a larger impact on the market.

And its new sub500cc super sport is the best weapon it could have.

We were drooling over its appearance features and specifications and the Rs 4.1 lakh price tag was dead on.

The only thing left to do was ride the bike and the Kari Motor Speedway in Coimbatore was the ideal location to evaluate this stunning Italian motorbike.

The adjective Gorgeous isnt one Ive used carelessly since it really is a beautiful design.

Im certain that this bike will draw attention wherever it goes whether you call it the powerful RSV4 or a scaled down Aprilia RS660.

The exposed aluminium frame grabs your attention as you turn your head to the side.

With its cuts and wrinkles the ingeniously designed side fairing increases visual impact without being ostentatious or cumbersome.

In typical super sport flair the tail portion is streamlined and rises from the midsection.

Like the rest of the bike it has a lovely form but remarkably this hasnt come at the sacrifice of the pillions useful space.

For present I would say that the RS 457 is the most attractive super sport motorbike in this market particularly when its white. More on it later.

Whether its the paint the aluminium parts on the bike or the spaces between the panels the quality fit and finish are generally excellent.

Having said that the switchgears plastics may have been of a better quality.

There are plenty of goodies in the Aprilia package including a stylish five inch TFT screen with Bluetooth.

It provides a wealth of bike related information in addition to phone and audio settings.

Additionally there are electronic rider aids.

Without affecting the maximum power output the three riding modes Sport Rain and Eco modify the throttle response.

Three traction control levels the lowest being the least invasive are added to the safety net.

If they so want the more seasoned hands may also decide to disable TC.

In addition to the conventional dual channel ABS the rear ABS may be disengaged.

Regarding ergonomics the rider and pillion may both comfortably fit in the seat.

The clip on handlebars are sufficiently broad to lessen the strain on your wrists and forearms without being too low.

It shouldnt be strictly forbidden to tour on the RS457.

 The Journey

It would have been illegal to put an engine that sounded industrial or lacked personality on a bike with that kind of attractive appearance wouldnt it?

Fortunately Aprilia has taken this into consideration and I promise that they have added soul to its 457cc engine.

The deep bassy tone is definitely that of a 270degree crank when you fire it up.  I could identify since I used to own a KTM 790 Duke.

The engine produces an engaging sound while moving but more significantly it feels fast torquey and has a strong punch in the centre of the rpm range.

The change of speed when accelerating was fun especially with the riding mode set to Sport for the racecourse and TC at least intervention.

Instead of being as crazy as the new KTM 390 Duke it is more controlled smoother and thrilling all at once.

The engines powerful bottom end which enabled me to engage the gearbox in third at 20 kmph and ride without any noticeable resistance was another aspect that struck me.

Perhaps there shouldnt be any problems with leisurely rides throughout the city.

Even though they are rare and exist in certain locations vibrations are never uncomfortable.

To provide you a more definitive assessment of this engines performance capacity to control heat and fuel economy we would want to test it more thoroughly and for a longer period of time in the city.

The answers will be revealed in a thorough road test back at the headquarters.

However a good engine would be useless if the chassis was subpar.

With this new chassis Aprilia has really outdone themselves as is customary.

The twinspar aluminium frame of the RS 457 is supported by a mono shock and a USD fork that can be adjusted for preload.

Together with the very gripping Euro grip Pro Torq Extreme tires they provide an exceptional handling combination.

Complete disclaimer  It would be an understatement to say that I felt out of my depth when I rode at the Kari Motor Speedway after two years.

At that point I was saved by the RS 457s kind and understanding disposition.

It was also amazing how composed you felt while braking or accelerating forcefully.  I sometimes took a variety of less than ideal paths around the circuit.

The bike didnt spit me into the side of the curbs it just let me fix my errors and keep going.

Although we would want to test it on a wet or dirty surface to see how smoothly it would interfere the traction control wasnt obtrusive on the racecourse.

However I wish Aprilia had gone the extra mile and provided stronger brake hardware than what is now available.

By using organic brake pads rather than sintered ones the bike lost significant bite and feedback that would have greatly increased my confidence and allowed me to stop much later than I actually did.

This is not a major problem however and it can be readily resolved by replacing the brake pads or if you prefer the master cylinder.

Alternatively you may choose the quick shfter and the sintered pads that Aprilia will offer as an accessory.

 Is it worth purchasing?

On the racecourse the Aprilia RS457 is a really amazing motorbike.

Its snappy engine and excellent handling make it fast forgiving and really engaging which is why I find it so appealing.

Not to mention the Aprilia brands attraction and its lovely look.

I like riding the bike for an hour although the brakes might have been improved and the TFTs menu system should have been easier to use.

However as there are still a number of unanswered issues I am unable to tell with certainty whether you should purchase it now.

such as the engines city driving ability heat control fuel economy and road conditions.

Additionally it will be fascinating to see the sales service and construction quality over time.

However considering how amazing it is to ride on a racecourse the Aprilia RS 457 is a bike that ought to be on your list of things to consider.
